Composer's note
Commissioned by Roger Muttitt for the 600th anniversary of Durham School in 2014, In this place is a setting of my own words and was first performed at a service of celebration in Durham Cathedral in June 2014. The text is a poem of renewal and the setting builds towards the final phrase ‘I will fly with angels’. Keep the chords as balanced as possible between the parts and aim for a really warm blend at all times. If possible, allow the tempo to ebb and flow with the sense of the words.

Recommended recording: Will Todd: Lux et Veritas (Signum SIGCD394) by Tenebrae, conducted by Nigel Short.

In this place I have been made new;
I have been gifted jewels beyond price.
In this place greater dreams are given.
I am made everlasting.

In this place I am light,
In this place, in your sight
I am made everlasting.

In your love, starting and ending;
I will be carried softly to heaven.
In your love I am given beauty.
I am made everlasting.
You give the strength for me to hold,
You are the hope that shines like gold.
In this place I am new.
In your love I am true.

I will fly with angels to this place,
And be made everlasting.

Best known for his choral works, he has worked closely with choirs such as The Sixteen and Tenebrae, and his 2003 jazz mass setting Mass in Blue has been performed extensively since its premiere by choirs in the UK, Europe and the USA. Other notable works for choir range from large scale oratorios such as Saint Cuthbert (recorded by the Hallé Orchestra in 2002) to the anthem The Lord is my shepherd, available for both upper and mixed voices with piano or orchestral accompaniment. He has worked on operas and stageworks, most notably in collaboration with Opera Holland Park for whom he wrote Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland in 2013. A clarinet concerto, written for Emma Johnson, has been performed in the UK, USA and Finland and recorded and broadcast by the BBC Concert Orchestra.
