WOZZECK kehrt zurück (WOZZECK comes back), Helmut Oehring’s multimedia take on the iconic play and opera, was unveiled to great acclaim at the Aachen Theater in June.
The 70-minute work features Jörg Wilkendorf as singer, speaker and guitarist, accompanied by three sopranos, three deaf mime artists, chamber chorus and chamber orchestra. The production in Aachen was staged by Michael Simon and conducted by Jeremy Hulin.
"…an optically and acoustically fascinating phenomenon that drew the audience into the vortex of its aural pictures… Jazz and rock elements, pulsing heartbeat rhythms, sequences of notes poised between melody and noise, a sonic psychology akin to film sequencing… all this sharpens the senses, questions facts and searches for thoughts about the culprit and victim Wozzeck." Aachener Nachrichten
"…Büchner’s/Berg’s characters naturally do not emerge as dramatis personae. Instead, Oehring speaks, as it were, through three soloists using sign language. They counterpoint the ‘Wozzeck situation’ in the form of a multimedia nightmare. This in no way lacks associative potential: the animated enthusiasm of the audience at the intensely successful premiere confirmed this… The use of sign language in Oehring’s case follows an authentic impulse… The work examines a really important, all too willingly suppressed, dimension of communication." Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung
Oehring’s newest music theatre piece, Kobayashi singt (unter fremden Sternen), is premiered at the Hamburg State Opera on 14 January followed by 11 further performances in Hamburg and Berlin. The 30-minute work is co-commissioned by the Staatsoper Hamburg, NOVOFLOT, Sophiensäle, DeutschlandRadio and the Ultraschall Festival.
