Improvise-ONE showcases Paquito D’Rivera as virtuosic performer and multi-talented composer, as he joins forces with the WDR Big Band, WDR Rundfunkorchester Köln and Dutch diva Fay Claassen under the baton of Michael Abene.
The DVD’s opening original, simply titled “Chick,” reflects D’Rivera’s admiration for colleague and fellow Boosey & Hawkes composer, Chick Corea, whom he views as “one of the best North American composers of all time.”
“Como Un Bolero” (which could be translated as either “Like a Bolero” or “I eat a Bolero”) is also featured. This sensual composition stands out on D’Rivera’s Funk Tango, the first release of his new label, which garnered him this year his 9th GRAMMY Award—"Best Latin Jazz Album."
This video podcast excerpted from a 2007 performance in Cologne, Germany was produced by Termidor Musikverlag and appears on Boosey.com with kind permission. Arrangements of Mr. D'Rivera's compositions "Chick" and "Como Un Bolero" are by Michael Abene.
