Frederick (Fritz) Loewe was born in Vienna, son of an operetta tenor * Studied with Busoni and D'Albert * In 1924 travelled with his father to the USA where he tried to earn a living as a pianist and composer * Began writing songs while playing piano in New York restaurants * In 1942 met lyricist Alan Jay Lerner, and they started collaborating on musicals * Success in 1947 with Brigadoon, followed by Paint Your Wagon and My Fair Lady * Lerner & Loewe regarded as one of the most successful artistic pairings in the history of the American musical
