From his earliest Scherzo (1883) to the Piccola suite Danza (1947), the complete piano compositions of Francesco Cilea (1866-1950) are presented in this volume for the first time in full version, collated with the source material, by Giuseppe Filianoti. Conceived in part for pedagogical purposes, these compositions are embued with the essence of the noble Italian tradition of “Salon music,” from the modest little descriptive sketch to the album leaf of moderate difficulty, to the more technically demanding pages with an old-fashioned or impressionist flavor. Cilea’s works for the piano are enhanced by a simplicity and beauty designed to instruct young learners, delight refined pianists, and be appreciated by the most savvy listeners. The volume includes an introductory essay and a chronology of Cilea’s life and works in Italian and English.
