Composer's Notes
I have long been fascinated by different vocal and ritualistic chant traditions. I enjoy writing new chants for people to sing in liturgy, but am also curious how the concept might transfer to instruments. This is how this little piece came about - it starts with a memory of a couple of simple modal melodies and develops into a miniature fantasy for instrumental quartet. It is dedicated to my teacher John Casken, on the occasion of his retiral from academic life.
