Composer's Notes

Unicorn is a 21-minute work for clarinet and string orchestra, commissioned by the Marvão International Music Festival. Inspired by the Renaissance symbol of the unicorn, a creature embodying purity, grace, and wonder, the piece features two movements: "The Majesty" and "Love Desires Only Beauty of Soul," both celebrating different aspects of this mythical being. The work incorporates elements from the "Musica Riservata" style of chromatic Motets and Madrigals, as well as 15th-century Franco-Flemish music, showcasing intricate polyphony and counterpoint that immerses the listener in a world of enchantment and festivity.

In today's rapidly changing and technology-dependent society, unicorns offer a guide for finding joy and happiness through pleasure, emotion, and love for life.
Ferran Cruixent, 2023
