ictus

ictus is a fast percussion ostinato; the continuous movement in changing metres, often with strong dynamic contrasts in the smallest of spaces, is divided among the instruments. The combination of tom-toms and bass drum forms a kind of ritornello. Now and then, cowbells, wood blocks, temple blocks and bongos are added in a complex compartmentalized sequence. The piece ends in a crescendoing improvisation on all instruments.
