Repertoire Note

These four short settings of French texts marked Goldschmidt’s return to orchestral writing after a gap of over thirty-five years. They have an intimate, valedictory atmosphere that is perfectly in keeping with the themes of farewell, separation and loss that permeate the cycle. This late work shows Goldschmidt as a master of sensitive word-setting and subtle and discreet orchestral colouring. A beautiful and haunting work that deserves to be heard more frequently.
