The attractive tunes of these Spanish folksongs were given to Shostakovich by a singer-friend, who wanted him to use them as a starting point for an elaborate recital-number. In the event, he decided against that plan and instead made the simplest and most conventional arrangements, leaving the tunes to be enjoyed for their own sake and as unpretentiously as possible. This disappointed the singer who decided against programming them, although they have been taken up by other performers.
