Repertoire Note
<ALIGN=LEFT>‘The Great Citizen’ was a grand two-part historical epic, directed by Fridrikh Ermler (the father of the well-known conductor Mark Ermler). It was based, albeit in a highly romanticised version, on the life and death of Sergei Kirov, whose assasination was the cue for some of the worst of the Stalinist purges (no-one knew then that he had in fact been killed on Stalin’s personal orders). At the time of writing, none of the music composed for this film is available for performance, although original materials are in existence and will appear in due course.
