Repertoire Note
Score for the film by Grigory Kozintsev and Leonid Trauberg
‘The Vyborg Side’was the last part of Kozintsev and Trauberg’s ‘Maxim Trilogy’ (see opp.41i and 45). Shostakovich’s score for it includes an overture in the form of a bright and assertive little march, a sequence called ‘The looting of the wine-cellars’ and a finale. Curiously none of this music ended up in Lev Atovmyan’s Suite from the ‘Maxim Trilogy’ op.50a. The overture is a strong piece and an effective concert opener.
