Composer's Notes
Chant 2 for John was written as a gift for my erstwhile teacher John Casken for his 70th birthday some years ago. John taught me at Durham University in the 1980s. It is a little miniature for piano lasting about two minutes. It is composed in three layers - in the middle there is modal, folk like material; above there is busy and glistening activity in the top range of the piano; and down below there is a deep, growling and tolling bass line. I suppose you could describe the piece as a mysterious and elusive three-part invention.
