Composer's Notes

The Lament of Mary, Queen of Scots is one of Robert Burns most beautiful and lesser known poems. I decided to set it to mark the 2009 celebrations of the 250th year since his birth. Burns lived and worked in Ayrshire where I grew up, and his memory and legacy was important to me in my formative years. My setting of this text, although short, is shaped like a little dramatic scena, where Mary’s words are divided between soprano and tenor soloists. They are accompanied sparsely and intimately by violin, cello and piano.

James MacMillan, January 2009
