This piece was commissioned in 2012 by the London Welsh Male Voice Choir for the Cultural OIympiad which accompanied the London Olympics of that year. It is based on the idea of the 'Hero's Journey' which Joseph Campbell (1904-1987), the American expert on mythology, identified as underlying many of the basic stories of many cultures in which the protagonist is summoned from their ordinary life by a crisis or a call, embarks on a quest while acquiring companions and encountering difficulties on the way, meets a climactic challenge, and then returns, transformed by the experience.
