Composer's Notes

“But in the night that has no mariner’s mark, a dead star’s light is better than the dark”

I was considering the idea of a piece for choir and orchestra in memory of the victims of Covid when I discovered a brilliant poem by my friend, the writer Grahame Davies. His moving poem uses images of the remains of things past as an allegory for our memories of those that have died. The ambience of the music is melancholic with dark low wood wind a particular feature. The piece was commissioned by BBC Radio 3, part of the '25 for 25' project for the year 2020.
