Composer's Notes

‘Musica concertante No. 2 is a work for two solo flutes and orchestra. However, it is neither a double concerto in the classical sense of the word nor a symphonie concertante. If I were to name a traditional form that I am alluding to in some way, then this piece is something like a concerto grosso, although the analogies to this form are also very loose. As the title suggests, it is concertante music, whereby the concertante instruments are not only the two flutes, but also the orchestral instruments in numerous fragments. In many passages, the orchestra becomes an equal partner to the soloists, while in others it is limited to providing accompaniment.
I realised this type of musical form for the first time a few years earlier (2016). Back then, I wrote Musica concertante No. 1 for cello, piano, percussion and string instruments. Perhaps I will return to this form in the future, because it allows me to explore other, for me completely new paths in order to build up the completely different drama of the piece.’
