The ‘Lamento’ as a musical expression of deep sorrow is reflected in this work both in the choice of tuba with its particularly dark tone and in the low register chosen mainly for the piano part. Sofia Gubaidulina notates both the left and right hand of the piano part in bass clef over large areas.
