Esa-Pekka Salonen leads the Los Angeles Philharmonic in two new works from Boosey & Hawkes composers on his last Green Umbrella concert on April 7: Enrico Chapela’s Li Po, inspired by Mexican poet José Juan Tablada’s translation of Li Po’s “Drinking Alone by Moonlight,” and Anna Clyne’s Within Her Arms for string ensemble.

Chapela’s Li Po is based on a poem by the same name, written by Mexican poet José Juan Tablada.

Says Chapela, “Tablada’s 'Li Po' is unique in Mexican literature, depicting the story of the Chinese poet Li Po’s 'Drinking Alone with the Moon' with beautiful calligrammes. The first time I saw this poem I was immediately captured by its visual presentation and only later discovered the exquisite poetry hidden underneath. Recognizing the power of combining the eye with the ear, semantics with phonetics, east and west, I knew I had to compose a work based on this piece of literature.”

Within Her Arms is music for Anna Clyne's mother. The title refers to the words of Vietnamese Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh:

Earth will keep you tight within her arms dear one - So that tomorrow
you will be transformed into flowers - This flower smiling quietly in
this morning field - This morning you will weep no more dear one - For
we have gone through too deep a night.
This morning, yes, this morning, I kneel down on the green grass - And
I notice your presence.
Flowers, that speak to me in silence.
The message of love and understanding has indeed come.

About Green Umbrella

The Green Umbrella new music series is a tribute to adventurous, open-minded
and curious music lovers. The series, with more than 20 years of history, offers
five concerts during the 2008/09 season, featuring the LA PHIL New Music Group led by Esa-Pekka Salonen and guest conductors.

Says Salonen, “One of things I’m most proud of is the unrivaled success of the Green Umbrella series. I wanted to make a gesture by having my last Green Umbrella concert focus on music of young and upcoming composers from all over the world. It is the most fitting way to wrap up my tenure: nurturing the next generation and helping new voices be heard and developed.”
