Composers Terence Blanchard, Anthony Braxton, Libby Larsen, Roscoe Mitchell, and John Williams are elected into the Department of Music alongside Mackey during its annual Ceremonial in May.

The 300 members of the academy—divided into Departments of Architecture, Art, Literature, and Music—are elected in recognition of remarkable achievement in their fields. 75 Honorary Members outside the United States and 20 American Honorary members whose work falls outside the four departments are also elected into the academy.

In April, Mackey’s new electric guitar concerto Aluminum Flowers—which features the soloist playing both an electric guitar and a classical nylon-string guitar—is performed by guitar soloist Gretchen Menn, the Utah Symphony, and David Robertson (April 20). Mackey's Turn the Key for orchestra is also featured on the program.
