Repertoire Note

A still little-known composer, the Neapolitan Nicola Conforto (1718-1788) achieved renown in his adopted city of Madrid, and had the honor of being the first to set to music one of Metastasio's finest dramas, the counterpart to L'Olimpiade (the latter with a love triangle of two men and one woman, Nitteti with two women and one man). The premiere was under the direction of Carlo Broschi (the celebrated castrato called Farinelli) and the cast included the famous tenor Anton Raaff, then at the height of his career, whose last role, a quarter century later was Idomeneo composed for him by the young Mozart.
