Programme Note

The composer and conductor Theodor Berger, born in Traismauer, Austria-Hungary in 1905 and died in Vienna in 1992, wrote the “Symphonic Triglyph ‘Three Windows’, Metamorphoses for Orchestra“ based on themes by Franz Schubert in 1978. It is a metamorphosis of themes and thematic fragments from Schubert's chamber music works, which Berger processes with stark contrasts. Influenced by Impressionism, but also by Bartók and Stravinsky, Berger defied categorization within any specific contemporary compositional movement and developed a nuanced musical language into which he often incorporated polytonality.
