His Faust project, which Eggert also describes as a musical phantasmagoria, is not only intended to be a representation of the much-discussed work complex, but also a kind of panopticon of musical approaches. ‘The special attraction here will be to work with stylistically stark contrasts,’ explains Eggert. ‘The ‘Faust’ plot (the various works used refer to different versions of the material, not just Goethe) will be reduced to just three characters: Faust (high baritone), Mephisto (low baritone) and Gretchen (soprano). With this constellation of characters, solos, duets and tercets can be performed, the three singers are constantly present on stage and part of a ‘talk show’. There is also a chorus that is involved throughout.’
