Composer's Notes
“The six-part piano cycle PARERGON was composed parallel to my work on my music-theatre HÖLDERLIN at the turn of the year 2006/2007. These are musical developments formed from early sketches as well as later orchestral sections. The concentration on the “linear” possibilities of the piano seemed to me an attempt at concentrating very complex shapes into the briefest possible form of expression. These are piano pieces which may have the effect of “impromptus” in the succession of virtuoso scenes and contemplative “states”. They go very much their own way alongside the opera as a kind of composed “parergon”. My gratitude goes to Martin Zehn for his assistance in the adaptation of the orchestral writing for piano.” (Peter Ruzicka)
