“The commission from the Amelio Trio, three wonderful young musicians, was a very welcome opportunity for me to immerse myself once again in the world of Beethoven’s piano trios – the new work will be included on a CD alongside two other Beethoven piano trios. Having already composed four of my own piano trios, each very different in structure, since 2013, looking back at the roots of this genre was extremely inspiring. Three particular aspects remained in my mind after studying Beethoven’s works and shaped my work on my new trio: a chromatic scale that is actually quite simple yet encompasses an entire movement, the brief moment of a minor second dissonance (B-A) in the opening melody of the Archduke Trio, and finally, the dedication added to this major work: in deep reverence.” (Johannes X.
