"This is a fantastic piece of music for school bands (and even adult band). It uses four American sea chanteys (although there might be some British influence here), Hornet and Peacock, Lowlands, What Shall We Do with a Drunken Sailor, and Bound for the Rio Grande. What is most interesting is that this might be called a theme and variations without themes. A bit of research on the original tunes reveals that Grundman takes liberties in each thematic presentation. Each tune is presented first in a highly variated style (this is, after all, a fantasy), and then again, usually with a faster tempo. I like to see thematic and rhythmic development in a piece, and in this respect Grundman is a master. Something different and unexpected happens nearly every measure. The style is lush and romantic with some gorgeous harmonies. Take the time to study this score before rehearsals. It is worth the effort. Incidentally, your students will love this piece!"
