Introduction

MouseRunning is an application that will generate a score for marimba solo Mouse Running. Each time MouseRunning is used, it will create a unique score. The uniqueness is indicated with a version code (for reference). MouseRunning can create a score in either A4 or US Letter format; the user is given this choice when the application is launched. MouseRunning is not able to generate a score document directly. Instead it generates an html page where all the coding is combined, along with the images, to form the layout of the score. The html code can be read and printed within any web browser. MouseRunning has been created with the software MaxMSP from Cycling ‘74 (www.cycling74.com).

How to install and use MouseRunning

Note: make sure to have installed the latest version of your operating system (e.g. Windows XP). Use ‘Software Update’ on Macintosh or the control panel 'Automatic Updates' on Windows to verify this. Additionally, you must ensure that the latest version of Quicktime is installed on your computer (www.apple.com/quicktime).

Macintosh

1. Go to https://www.boosey.com/mouserunning/

2. Click on the "Download for Mac" link. Download it, and unzip it simply by double-clicking it. Inside is the MouseRunning application with a blue icon.

3. Now you are ready to launch the application with a double-click. A window appears with the image of a mouse running. From the ‘Choose Format…’ dropdown select either A4 or US Letter. Now the program will start calculating a path for the mouse to run from high to low.

4. Once this is done, you will be prompted to choose the destination where the score will be saved. From this dialogue, it is possible to create a new folder, for instance with the name ‘Mouse Running Score’. As soon as you click ‘Choose’, a score will be generated line by line. A small window will open that displays portions of the score as it is being generated. Once the process is complete the program will close automatically. It will take a few moments for the score to be generated during which time it is important not to switch to another application (MouseRunning should stay in the foreground).

5. Once the score generation has finished, go to the folder where the score was saved and find the html document ‘mouse.htm’ (this contains a large number of image files). Double-clicking this document will launch the default web browser which will then display the score in its entirety. Each version of Mouse Running is unique and you may like to try generating a number of different versions to choose from.

6. Print the score following the usual procedure.

7. You might like to create a pdf file (see the ‘pdf’ button in the bottom left tab of the print dialogue box) which allows you to store a single document for future reference. The html document and image files can now be deleted.

Congratulations on your unique Mouse Running!

Windows

1. Go to https://www.boosey.com/mouserunning/

2. Click on "Download for Windows" and confirm that you want to open it.
Double Click on “MouseRunning folder win”.
Click on “MouseRunning.exe” (or: “MouseRunning” file with the blue or computer window icon).
Choose “Extract all / to” from the menu or “Extract to the specified folder” from the menu under the right mouse button (NOTE: the various Zip handling programs - WinZip, 7-Zip, WinRAR, etc - all behave slightly differently. Choose an option that will extract all the files together).
Run wizard and make a new folder (for example “MouseRunning”) for example on your desktop. Remember the name of the new folder.
OR:
Right-click on "Download for Windows" and choose 'save target as' and save this document to desktop. Once downloading has finished, find the file on your desktop, right-click on it and choose 'extract all / to'. A wizard opens that guides you through the extraction process. Inside the newly created folder is a folder that contains an application named MouseRunning.

3. Now you are ready to launch the application. Find the new folder and double click on “MouseRunning folder win”.
Double click on “MouseRunning” folder.
Double click on “MouseRunning” icon.
A window appears with the image of a mouse running.
From the ‘Choose Format…’ dropdown select either A4 or US Letter. Now the program will start calculating a path for the mouse to run from high to low.

4. When prompted choose the folder you have just made. The score will be generated line by line. Once the process is complete the program will close automatically. It will take a few moments for the score to be generated.

5. Once the score generation has finished, go to the folder where the score was saved. Double click the "mouse" document (html) and the score will display. Each version of Mouse Running is unique and you may like to try generating a number of different versions to choose from.

6. Print the score following the usual procedure.
If this does not work properly (pages do not appear entirely on paper), find the image files that represent the individual pages of the score (page0, page1, etc.) in the folder where you stored the score. Print the pages by right-clicking on them one by one and choosing ‘Print’. To check if the whole page will be printed, check if the Boosey & Hawkes logo on the front page is visible in full. If not, choose another format when the wizard prompts you to do so. Possibilities vary per computer (f.i. ‘fax page in full’, ‘adapt picture to frame’), so here you will have to experiment a bit.

Congratulations on your unique Mouse Running!
