Repertoire Note

With the songs from this period (BB42-47), Bartók (and Kodály) wanted to expose the beauty of the original tunes, rather than (as later) extract more radical compositional ideas from them. These songs do not need to be performed as Bartók grouped them together, but can be mixed and matched, as he did in his own programmes.
