Programme Note

This music is composed to accompany Woman Holding a Balance in Dutch/Light (After Vermeer), a short film by artist Jyll Bradley and David Ward. Shifting harmonic colors undulate in strange loops until they reach a melodic section, before returning to the stillness of the opening music It incorporates text written and recited by David Ward.

"Woman Holding a Balance in Dutch/Light (After Vermeer) centres upon a performance work by David Ward made in response to Dutch/Light a sculpture by Jyll Bradley. Jyll, a former student of David, invited him to inhabit her sculpture and make a work within it. Drawing from the theme of Dutch/Light David revisited his first love as a young art student - the paintings of Dutch artist Joannes Vermeer (1632-1675). Vermeer is well known for his use of light as a framing device for ideas around time, human interiority and space. In the film, shot over one sun filled day, David loops in and out of the sculpture performing gestures from the subjects of Vermeer's paintings. This film brings together three artists from different generations and times whose work shares the languages of light and space." - Jyll Bradley
