Composer's Notes
‘I received the commission to compose this string quartet before the Tokyo String Quartet decided to disband. Apart from that, I was planning to compose a new work for the quartet for the current season anyway. However, when I learnt that it would be their last season and the last work I would compose for the Tokyo String Quartet, I decided to subtitle the string quartet ‘Farewell’. It has the feeling of ‘farewell’ in more ways than one.’ (Lera Auerbach)
