Ana Sokolovic Salutes Montréal with New Orchestral Work
In August, the Orchestre Métropolitain and Yannick Nézet-Séguin premiere Ana Sokolovic’s Montréal cirque.
Ana Sokolovic's new work for orchestra Montréal cirque receives its world premiere on August 5 with the Orchestre Métropolitain and Yannick Nézet-Séguin at their annual large-scale free concert at Mount Royal Park in Montréal. The five-minute concert opener honors both the 150th anniversary of the opening of Mount Royal Park, as well as the city of Montréal at large, which Sokolovic calls "the greatest city on Earth."
Mount Royal Park was designed by the famous American landscape architect Frederick Law Olmstead in 1876. Known as one of North America’s most beloved green spaces, Sokolovic describes the top of this mountain as “the carnival of urban connection.“
The composer states:
“One of my great joys as a Montréaler is strolling through the city and feeling the buzz of people connecting through collective celebration. On Mont Royal, teenagers party late into the night, couples intertwine on romantic walks, and immigrant families have multi-generational picnics. The mountain is a perfect stage for the beautiful circus of Montréal’s social life.”
This summer also sees the European premiere of Sokolovic's opera Clown(s) with director Jirí Nekvasil and Canticum Ostrava in the Czech Republic (June 27), which premiered to great acclaim at Opera de Montréal this past season. In addition, her Concerto pour basson et sept cordes graves receives its US premiere at Yellow Barn in Vermont (July 16), followed by the UK premiere of You Can Die Properly Now with soprano Emma Pennel, Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, and Rafael Payare at Edinburgh's Usher Hall (Aug 20).
