New edition of Prokofieff’s Romeo and Juliet published

Boosey & Hawkes and Sikorski launch a series of Prokofieff scores with a new performing edition of the complete ballet Romeo and Juliet, one of the composer’s most popular works.
A new series of Prokofieff scores is launched with a revised and corrected performing edition of the composer’s complete four-act ballet music for Romeo and Juliet, published as a large format study score for optimal legibility and running close to 500 pages. We are most grateful to Vladimir Jurowski, celebrated conductor of Prokofieff and many other Russian and Soviet composers, for reviewing the Romeo and Juliet full score before publication.
This new performing edition of Romeo and Juliet, is based on the full score that featured in the series of Collected Works of Serge Prokofieff, published in Moscow in 1961. The revised edition captures many corrections, gathered over the years from conductors and music librarians, and newly-engraved orchestral parts produced to modern professional standards are available for hire.
As noted in the 1961 score, Prokofieff collaborated with co-authors Sergei Radlov, Adrian Piotrovsky and Leonid Lavrovsky in creating this dramatico-musical work. The libretto – the dramatic core of the ballet – was conceived as a sequence of tableaux, taking inspiration from a number of sources, including Italian pre- and Early Renaissance paintings, as well as Shakespeare’s iconic play. The Kirov Theatre printed the libretto in a 1939 theatrical booklet for the ballet’s premiere production in 1940.

Work is near completion on a similar revised and corrected new edition of Prokofieff’s ballet Cinderella, and newly engraved materials of the suites from both ballets will be available. New editions of the symphonies will follow over the coming year, starting with the Classical Symphony (Symphony No.1), Symphony No.2, Symphony No.4 (first version) and Symphony No.5.
This publishing initiative results from the 2019 merging of Boosey & Hawkes and Sikorski within Concord Music Publishing. Both classical music publishers have a long history of specialising in Russian and Soviet era music and have joined their expertise together to produce the new Prokofieff edition, alongside parallel work on a new Shostakovich edition. All scores in this series and related orchestral parts are newly computer typeset
Boosey & Hawkes and Sikorski completed their new edition of the 15 Shostakovich symphonies this year, to mark the 50th anniversary of the composer’s death. Further Shostakovich publications in coming months include new large format study scores of Violin Concerto No.1 and both cello concertos, reductions of the concertos for soloist and piano, and new vocal scores of Symphony No.13 ‘Babi Yar’ and Symphony No.14.
