Composer's Notes

“Psalm 121 has long been revered as a source of protection and guidance for travelers. This ancient poem that dates back to the time of the Second Temple, has been cherished for its beautiful language and reassuring message. The use of Psalm 121 as an amulet or talisman reflects the belief that the power of God can provide strength and protection, even in the face of danger and uncertainty. For centuries, travelers have recited this psalm, or carried it with them in written or physical form, as a way of invoking the divine presence and ensuring a safe journey.

In addition to its use as an amulet for travelers, Psalm 121 has also taken on new significance in our modern times, particularly for refugees and displaced persons fleeing conflict and persecution. This psalm speaks to the human desire for safety, security, and refuge, and acknowledges the challenges and risks that can arise during journeys of migration and displacement. The powerful words of Psalm 121 offer a message of hope and resilience to those who find themselves far from home in times of hardship and adversity. Thus, this ancient text continues to resonate with people of all backgrounds and faiths, providing comfort and strength to those in need, and serving as a powerful reminder of the enduring human spirit.” (Lera Auerbach)
