Programme Note

Lera Auerbach has often used the term ‘Prayer’ as a title for various instrumental works. On 11 January 2009, Alexander Filterstein premiered Auerbach's ‘Prayer’ for bass clarinet solo in New York.
There are other compositions by Auerbach, some of which are titled with the English term, such as ‘Prayer’ for cor anglais solo op. 33a or ‘Prayer’ for soprano and piano op. 37. The piece ‘T'filah’ also belongs in this cycle, as the Hebrew term translates as prayer. ‘T'filah’ for violin solo op. 33 is the original version of “Prayer” op. 33, which was later arranged for cor anglais. For the composer, praying for all prayers means not only asking for something, but also being able to ask questions in prayer.
