Notas del compositor

This work consists of two independent parts, which can be played either in succession or independently, as distinct works.

The prelude and toccata are inspired by the string music of the Balkan gypsies.

Prelude (for solo viola): a slow piece, which uses a free, melismatic style (a heritage of Indian and Middle-Eastern music). The piece incorporates both micro-intervals and phrases inspired by vocal music, which are integral to the music and its performance.

Toccata (for viola and piano): a quick and rhythmic piece. The piano evokes the cimbalom. Repetitive gestures recall the rondo, a traditional Serbian dance, in which repetitions become an important basis for the rhythm, leading us to forget melodic aspects.

The gypsy violin has a rich and dark sonority, which is why I chose to use the similar sound of the viola.
