Without good reason, Pleyel’s five cello concertos are overshadowed by the concertos of his contemporaries, notably by those of Joseph Haydn. Pleyel’s highly original contributions to the genre, however, which are among his most interesting works, once again captivate the listener through the composer’s inventiveness and charming musical noblesse. The Hungarian cellist Peter Szabó, who presented the acclaimed first recording of all five concertos on the Hungaroton Label in 2003, has edited the concertos of the Simrock Original Edition, providing critical editions with his own cadenzas. The scores and performance material are available for hire. The concertos No. 3 to 5 will be published in 2006.
