Elegy (2023) is cast as a passacaglia, built upon a recurring bass line over which a series of evolving melodies unfold. Beginning with quiet restraint, these lines gradually gather strength and intensity, reaching moments of considerable emotional power. Echoing the composer's choral setting of Wordsworth's I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud, the contrapuntal texture is conceived vocally, with each strand imagined as an independent singing voice.
