Britten's operatic adaptation of The Turn of the Screw, based on the 1898 book by Henry James, was premiered in 1954. Britten made use of a mixture of tonality and dissonance, with subtle references to the twelve-tone series, its use having been popularised by the German composer Arnold Schoenberg. This edition contains a vocal score with piano accompaniment.
