MacMillan, James - Christmas Oratorio

Composed in 2019, James MacMillan’s Christmas Oratorio is a summatory work in his output, collecting together settings of poetry, liturgy and scripture which explore themes related to the birth of Jesus. Whereas many of the chorus sections draw on Latin liturgy, the reflective arias for soprano and baritone adopt vivid texts by Robert Southwell, John Donne and John Milton. Multiple aspects of Christmas are captured, balancing childhood innocence against more ominous moods threatening the Holy Family, which resonate in our own time. MacMillan’s writing for chorus is richly varied, from carol-like celebrations, through a pair of tableaux containing the Biblical narrative according to St Matthew and the mysterious opening of St John’s Gospel, to a simple closing Scottish lullaby. Both parts of the full-evening work are framed by orchestral sinfonias, bridging the distance across the ages.

Das 2019 entstandene Weihnachtsoratorium James MacMillans stellt ein zusammenfassendes Werk dar, eine kompositorische Synthese aus Poesie, Liturgie und biblischen Texten, die Themen im Zusammenhang mit der Geburt Christi beleuchten. Während viele der Chorteile auf der lateinischen Liturgie basieren, stützen sich die Arien für Sopran und Bariton in ihrer reflektiven Innerlichkeit auf expressive Texte von Robert Southwell, John Donne und John Milton. Verschiedene Aspekte des Weihnachtsfests werden erfasst und miteinander in Kontrast gesetzt: von kindlicher Unschuld bis hin zu düsteren, für die Heilige Familie bedrohlichen Stimmungen - die in ihrer Ambivalenz bis in unsere Gegenwart hineinwirken. MacMillans Chorsatz ist außerordentlich vielfältig, von feierlich-fröhlichen Passagen im Stil von Weihnachtsliedern über zwei Szenen, die die biblische Erzählung nach Matthäus sowie die geheimnisvolle Eröffnung des Johannesevangeliums musikalisch umsetzen, bis hin zu einem abschließenden schlichten schottischen Wiegenlied. Strukturell sind die beide Teile des abendfüllenden Werks von Symphonien eingerahmt, die als klangliche Brücke eine Verbindung über die Jahrhunderte hinweg herstellen.

Si nombre des sections chorales s’appuient sur la liturgie latine, les airs contemplatifs de la soprano et du baryton adoptent des textes très éloquents de Robert Southwell, John Donne et John Milton. On y trouve les multiples facettes de Noël, qui mettent en regard l’innocence de l’enfance et des climats plus menaçants envers la Sainte Famille, comme en écho à notre propre époque. L’écriture chorale de MacMillan est richement variée, avec notamment des morceaux de célébration rappelant des chants de Noël, deux tableaux renfermant le récit biblique selon Saint-Matthieu et la mystérieuse ouverture de l’Évangile de Saint-Jean, ou encore la berceuse écossaise toute simple de la conclusion. Les deux parties de cet ouvrage qui constitue une soirée de concert complète sont encadrées par des sinfonias orchestrales qui opèrent le lien entre les époques.
