The hymn ‘I heard the voice of Jesus say’ uses a folksong that was revived by Ralph Vaughan Williams for the 1906 publication of The English Hymnal. The tune, named ‘Kingsfold’ after the village in which he heard a version sung to him, was initially associated with a ballad called Dives and Lazarus. Its modal character and timeless beauty have made it a beloved hymn tune, given new life in this fresh choral arrangement by English composer Clive Osgood. The tune itself is passed around the choral parts and intertwined with increasingly lavish harmonic treatment, coming to a climax in the last verse: ‘I am this dark world’s light’.
