"It is rare for one of my works to have such an abstract title. But the three movements that make up the quartet show three kinds of inner states. The first, with its archaic mode and contrapuntal writing, calls forth highly nostalgic memories of childhood. The second, by contrast, involves rhythmic blocks and makes reference to pop music, its incessant activity rushing ever forward. The third movement expresses sadness at the brevity of life and the impossibility of going back in time. The quartet ends "in the air" on an unresolved harmony which puts forth the question that is ever-present in my work: and afterwards?"

(Guillaume Connesson)
