Barter has been previously set by other composers, but it is usually published under its first line ("Life has loveliness to sell") rather than the title given by the author. I think this is a mistake, since Teasdale's point is that we can only experience the beautiful things that life has to offer if we are willing to trade (barter) something of ourselves.
