Fiona Driver's Scottish Fiddle Course is a new publication, aimed at either complete beginners or people who may be returning to the instrument after a long absence.

It begins with full details of how to choose your first fiddle and how to take care of it, including a chapter on tuning with both the pegs and the fine tuners, and how to change a whole set of strings. It shows you what all the different parts of the fiddle and bow are for, and contains lots of interesting and useful advice, from how to put on a shoulder rest, to what catgut strings were really made of!

With 35 progressive lessons, it starts with picking up your fiddle and learning how to hold it. One finger at a time, you move on to simple exercises and tunes, and you can take it at your own pace and learn at a speed that suits you. There is a basic music reading course, and if you work through it at the same time as the lessons, it will help you to read the music as you go along.

A theory section explains issues such as time and key signatures, with scales and finger charts for the basic major and minor keys with 0 – 3 sharps, and there are chord charts for accompanists. This book comes with a fully accompanied 41 track CD, recorded at two speeds so you can hear what the tunes sound like at full speed, but practise slowly.
