'Six Folk Melodies'' for piano are brief evocations of a rural landscape. They are imaginary melodies, which in character loosely resemble original folk melodies. The first and the fifth portray pipes in the mountains, first drawing closer and then moving further off, the second and the fourth are songs, a little nostalgic and pensive in nature; the third is a crazy dance, while the sixth is a melody which tells a story. ''Six Folk Melodies'' is one of my early compositions, written in 1958, before I began to study composition. Even then I was fascinated by ascetically simple forms. Each of the melodies is based on one motif, which runs throughout the work. The composition is intended for young adepts of piano playing, but it may also be of interest to pianists, as simplicity is always problematic. [Z. Krauze]
