In this DVD, now repackaged and represented at midprice, Mark Minkowski presents a varied programme of well-loved popular pieces and forgotten masterworks by Jacques Offenbach.

The star of the evening was undoubtedly the Swedish mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter, one of the most versatile and charismatic singers of her generation.

Given the success of Offenbach's dramatic works, his numerous pieces of dance music are almost forgotten. However, they too are proof of the composer's talent to invent melodies in abundance.

This concert also includes the 'Infernal Galop' (Can-Can) from Orphee aux Enfers and the wonderful 'Belle nuit, ô nuit d'amour' (barcarolle) from The Tales of Hoffman.
