When composer Francis Poulenc visited some cousins in 1940, he sketched out this musical background for Jean de Brunhoff’s classic story about Babar the Elephant. Poulenc returned to the score in 1945 to finish it as a work for narrator and background musical expression scored for the Piano. It is delightfully expressive and has enchanted children all over the world. This Orchestral version was created by French composer Jean Françaix in 1962 and has earned a beloved place in the repertoire.
