For the orchestral version of 1919 he selected four pieces from the eponymous piano suite (1914–17), orchestrated them with all his grace and artistry and placed the pieces in a new and effective sequence. The work quickly gained great popularity immediately after the concertant world premiere, when three dances from the orchestral suite were included in a ballet production. The edition by Jean-François Monnard is based on all available existing sources. The preface features a great deal of information on the interpretation and performance history of the work.
