The New Curwen Method uses the principles of John Curwen in preparing to sing at sight but is in no way intended to revive Tonic-Sol-fa as a complete musical language. The essential preparation for reading notation is to develop the 'inner ear' and memory so that the note can be heard mentally before it is sung or played. The hand signs and ingeniously rhyming syllables of sol-fa have no substitute in any other method.
