In 2014, Carlo Bergonzi, ‘Prince of Tenors’, will be 90 years old.

Decca is already honouring this occasion in grand catalogue style with a special 17CD commemorative box – The Verdi Tenor – which includes all his best-known Verdi recordings.

But for those who would prefer to enjoy Bergonzi at his best in a more compact compilation format, this re-issue of the successful 2-CD set The Sublime Voice, is the perfect aperitif for discovering and celebrating this great voice.

The compilation includes 40 popular operatic aria and scenes from the Decca and Deutsche Grammophon catalogues. All Bergonzi’s ‘greatest hits’ are here. Puccini is represented with five tracks from La Bohème and four from Madama Butterfly plus the sublime tenor aria from Tosca, ‘E lucevan le stelle’. Yet as it is Verdi whose name is synonymous with Bergonzi, in this compilation all the key operas are well represented with several excerpts from Rigoletto, Un Ballo in Maschera, La traviata and Il trovatore.

Throughout the compilation, Bergonzi's imperious partners include Renata Tebaldi, Birgit Nilsson, Joan Sutherland, Fiorenza Cossotto, and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau
